Let's say #AdultMandates become a thing tomorrow. What might that look like for America's adults? Even if you lived through chicken pox, measles and/or mumps the CDC says as 55-year-old you will be hypothetically mandated to immediately receive the following:
- 1 flu shot (yearly)
- Tdap or Td (if it's been longer than 10 years since your last one)
- Shingles vaccine
- MMR (1-2 doses)
- Chicken pox vaccine (Varicella, 2 doses)
- HepA (2-3 doses)
- HepB (3 doses)
Shouldn't we question the herd immunity mantra when less than 33% of Idaho adults are up-to-date on vaccines in decades with NO resurgence of epidemics?
If you support mandates for school kids, you support mandates for everyone -- even YOU.
Below is the CDC recommended 2018 Adult Vaccine Schedule. (ACIP approved the 2019 Adult Vaccine Schedule at their meeting last October with additional vaccines requirements for Hep A)
The thing that stood out to us the most was the recommendation we have boxed in red. According to the statement in the box, the CDC says YOU should get these vaccines if you did not get them when you were a child. Unlike the 2017 schedule, it makes no mention of exceptions being made for evidence of prior infection.
Let's say you're 55 years old. You had both chicken pox and measles as a child according to this now hypothetically mandated schedule, THAT DOESN'T MATTER. You'll be getting 2 doses of a varicella (chicken pox) vaccine and 1-2 doses of a measles vaccine STAT. This is of course in addition to your yearly flu shot, your Tdap booster, and your shingles vaccine. Also, go ahead and roll up your sleeve for 2-3 Hep A vaccines, and 3 HepB vaccines. BUT WAIT! There's more! In a few years, you'll be due for 1-2 doses of the pneumonia vaccine, too! Depending on your doctor's recommendations, there's also the meningitis & HIB vaccines to consider as well!
Each of these vaccines is a liability-free product created by a manufacturer whose safety records have NOT been monitored in the last 30 years by the Health and Human Services Department who was charged with protecting the citizens for corporate exploitation of an unsafe product.
