The Bill HB 152/ HB 196 creates a licensing status for naturopathic physicians who have graduated from an accredited naturopathic medical school (in Canada and the United States) and have passed an exam to fully practice naturopathic medicine in the state of Idaho. The bill would also create a Naturopathic Licensure Board. This board will be an advisory board to the Idaho Board of Medicine.
HFI stands in full opposition to this very discriminatory bill. It destroys Naturopathy and will eliminate the freedom of healthcare choice for thousands of people in Idaho.
Naturopathy uses natural substances such as herbs, vitamins, minerals and restorative therapy to heal the body. It is a very safe profession that hasn't hurt or killed anyone. We have plenty of Medical Doctors, there isn't a shortage. People can choose to seek allopathic care. In fact our entire system is set up for people to seek allopathic care.
What we do have a shortage of is good naturopathic doctors, and this bill will further create a disappearance of another modality which will help patients heal.
Miste Karlfeldt Executive Director of Health Freedom Idaho:
It creates a monopoly for only certain doctors schooled in colleges in the U.S. and Canada.
The Board of Medicine will over naturopathic licensing, this is akin to having electricians overseeing plumbers. They don't have the same tools and approach problems in a different fashion.
You cannot centralize all the diverse information found in traditional naturopathic medicine. People all over the world bring knowledge and traditions that are 1000's of years old. These come together to create a holistic integrative form of medicine. I want to make sure it exists and stays diverse. When you create an umbrella of over sight of government. They are going to dictate your care.

GOVERNMENT CREATED MONOPOLY
This legislation creates a government endorsed monopoly which will put the majority of Idaho Naturopaths out of business - by some estimates this will affect 80% of Idaho naturopaths. If a small select group of naturopaths are licensed and / or covered by insurance, there will be no way that other naturopaths can compete. And consumers will be the ones who suffer.
OVERSEEN BY MEDICAL BOARD without training in naturopathic traditions
This board includes a Medical Doctor, who is not trained in this modality, is not educated in this modality, doesn't use the same tools and doesn't understand foundational principles of naturopathy. On top of this the BOARD OF MEDICINE will oversee it?? Medical doctors DO NOT understand this modality.
Naturopathy is NOT Medicine.
They are as different as night and day.
We will lose the great diversity in Naturopathy.
Again consumers will suffer.
REGULATION SETS THE STAGE FOR RESTRICTION.
It creates a regulating body which sets the stage for insurance companies to dictate what naturopaths can and can't do in providing care which will provide sub-optimal care to patients. Likely, in these conditions Naturopathy's hands will be so tied it will lose it's identity, ultimately fail patients and Idahoans will greatly suffer for it.
It sets the stage for creating "Standard of Care" vs individualized patient care and innovation which we've watched destroy allopathic medicine. We are the richest country yet have the highest morbidity and mortality of all of the Western World.
LICENSING ELIMINATES THE DIVERSITY & EXTENSIVE TRADITIONS OF EUROPEAN NATUROPATHIC METHODS
The schools that are included in this licensing bill are not long established or long recognized educational institutions. It has only been since the early 2000's that these schools fell into favor again to be recognized as educational institutions.
Meanwhile, the majority of Idaho's naturopaths have been well trained oversees and have been healing Idahoans for decades.
This bill will cause a handful of schools to drive what naturopathy will be in the future and we lose all the rich tradition of Naturopathy which has primarily been established in European countries and cultivated over hundreds of years. The United States is a fairly young country in the scheme of things and it is well known that the US is by no means a well recognized authority in naturopathic traditions.
We are lucky to have naturopaths who've studied abroad here in Idaho. People travel to Germany and other countries every year to get the best care money can provide and doing away with traditional naturopathic care. Licensing will take this life saving care away from Idahoans as well.
IT HAS NOT WORKED FOR OTHER STATES
It has not worked in other states. It's working for the select naturopaths but all the other naturopaths disappear or have relocated to states like Idaho. And who it's ultimately an most importantly not working for, is the patients.
Recently we've had an expansion of Medicaid in this state. The state is rightfully concerned of how this cost will be covered. By doing away with true traditional naturopathic care you will be making that pool of sick people who aren't able to afford care and end up in that Medicaid gap even wider. If Idahoans won't be able to seek the best naturopathic care to help prevent serious chronic diseases, they will only get sicker and we will have a true financial disaster and medical epidemic on our hands.

Tell our legislators there is no reason for the government to become involved and distribute our rights back to us in smaller packages. Let the market work. Don't let the government bestow extra power on one select group, there's no way other naturopaths will be able to compete with that.
