Organic: Spend Your Grocery Dollars Wisely

Organic: Spend Your Grocery Dollars Wisely

HOW DO WE KNOW HOW OUR FOOD IS GROWN?

Picture

We all know that organic food is often more expensive the conventionally grown foods.  And watching budgets we cannot always buy the organic version of the produce.  However, there are some foods that need to be bought organic as they contain high levels of pesticides. Each year the Environmental Workers Group (EWG) comes out with their list of the dirty 12 and the clean 15. The lists are based on the amount of pesticides found with the foods when grown conventionally.

Each of these foods tested positive for a number of different pesticide residues and showed higher concentrations of pesticides than other produce.
Key findings:

  • More than 98 percent of strawberry samples, peaches, nectarines, and apples tested positive for at least one pesticide residue.
  • The average potato had more pesticides by weight than any other produce.
  • A single grape sample and a sweet bell pepper sample contained 15 pesticides.
  • Single samples of strawberries showed 17 different pesticides.
